  • Art Gallery of Ontario houses a collection of over 98,000 works,  cutting-edge contemporary art such as Untilled by Pierre Huyghe, European masterpieces such as Peter Paul Rubens’s The Massacre of The Innocents, the vast collection by the Group of Seven, works of Indigenous Canadian artists, Inuit and Métis artists, sculptures, prints & drawings, a photography collection that tracks the impact of the medium works by artists such as Garry Winogrand and Diane Arbus; and with focused collections in Gothic boxwood miniatures and Western and Central African art.
  • The Gallery of Ontario is world-famous for its photography collection of about 70,000 photographs dating from the 1840s to the present day. The highlight of this photograph collection is those 495 photo albums which are from the First World War. Two halls on the ground floor as especially dedicated to the items from this collection.

History

The Art Gallery of Ontario was established in 1900 as the Art Museum of Toronto, by a group of private citizens and members of the Toronto Society of Arts.  Later in 1919, it was renamed the Art Gallery of Toronto. And in 1966, it was renamed the Art Gallery of Ontario.

 The Art Gallery of Ontario also operates one of its kind, a  residence program for artists, granting access to its facilities, a stipend covering materials and living costs, and a dedicated studio to its selected artists.
